Urban Farms and Living Simple

Posted on

town_239First you don’t hear from me for months on this site, and now you hear twice in one week.  Welcome to my world.  I follow the feelings inside of me, and when those feelings come alive I write.  That’s what I do you know…I write!

We had a wonderful weekend.  A new “urban farm” center opened up a mile from our home so we just had to go visit.  In fact, I’ll be writing an article about the new store and the great area we live in….great because of the civic commitment to fostering self-sustaining lifestyles.

We bought our organic seeds, and then spent a portion of the weekend preparing our garden for planting.  Everywhere we went people were doing the same, and the community gardens were filled with our neighbors digging dirt, weeding, and enjoying the community spirit.town_216

I was also turned on to raising quail while we visited the new farm center, so I’ll be spending some time this spring building a quail shelter and quail run for our backyard. Those little devils lay an egg per day once they are twelve weeks old, and they are fully-mature for eating after fifteen weeks…..and they take up about a tenth of the space that our chickens take.

Bev wants to pick up a couple pygmy goats and have them for milking, so I’m sure we’ll be doing that as well before the summer ends.

Busy times around here, but the more I learn about urban farming the more excited I am about it.

I hope you all had a great weekend.  Thanks for dropping by.

Still Living the Simple Life

Posted on

writer's digest and chickens 002It’s been a long time since I wrote on this blog.  I hope you all don’t mind the sudden visit.

Since I first started this blog almost two years ago, I have seen nothing that can change my viewpoints on living simple.  There are too many economic problems today for anyone to blithely say that everything will be all right.

70% of the United States economy is consumer-based.  Stop and think about that for a second.  Okay you say, so what?  Here’s the so what……what if the consumers can’t afford to buy products?

Does that seem far-fetched to you?  Then you aren’t paying attention.  Full-time jobs have been replaced by part-time jobs and the government calls that progress and good economic news.  40% of Americans are one paycheck away from poverty….one paycheck!  The statistics are unbelievable and still people don’t wake up to the fact that change must happen and it must happen with them.

I have not owned a car for two years.  Bev has one for her job but I haven’t had one since my Ford Ranger blew a rod and died an ugly death.  Do I miss having transportation? Of course!  Do I need it?  Not at all!  I have the money right now to go out and buy a used compact pickup truck, but I won’t do it simply because I don’t need it.

We owe no money to credit companies.  We have lowered our bills by 30% over the past two years and we will lower them another 20% this year.  We have done it by adopting responsible spending and buying only according to need.

We do not have arguments about money? We have no stress caused by money problems.  How about you?  Can you say the same thing?  I hope so….I really do….but if not, then you might want to consider living a simpler lifestyle.

Have a great day. I’m going to go feed the chickens and then get back to writing.

Random Thoughts About Living Simple

wash d.c.I was reading Ruchira’s blog today about gray hair.  I know, I know, but hang with me. I have a point to all of this.angelina

She was talking about a celebrity that is allowing her gray hair to show, and the point of it all was to be comfortable with who you are and how you look.

I first spotted gray hair when I was twenty-five. I have never tried to cover it up and today I am mostly gray.  I happen to like it because that’s who I am.  Bev is salt and pepper and she looks very good that way….I would never want her to color her hair in an attempt to look younger….she will always be beautiful to me.Train ride from Elbe to 018

Living Simple?  It’s an attitude and way of looking at life.  All of the window-dressing b.s. like products to make you look younger are just so much nonsense to me….my life is simple as long as I allow it to be simple.  I am what I am.  People can accept that or they can pee up a rope…it makes no difference to me.

On to gardening….our garden is growing nicely but it could use some sunshine.  The corn looks bewildered and the pumpkins keep poking out looking for some warmth.  The chickens are growing rapidly and so far of the nine we have only spotted two roosters….so it looks like we’ll have six or seven eggs daily by the end of the summer.

random backyard pics 002This weekend we are devoting our time to yardwork….again, not very exciting, but Bev and I love spending time together.  Weeding the garden gives us a chance to catch up on our week and talk about the future…it is our time and we enjoy it very much.

Again, Living Simple!  We have an attitude of gratitude and we love our lives.  We have old furniture and secondhand everything, and to some it might look like we are one step above welfare, but we are so rich in everything that counts.writer's digest and chickens 002

How about you?

Have a great weekend and thanks for stopping by.

Angelina Jolie and Living Simple

Posted on

angelinaI don’t know how you feel about Angelina Jolie. I guess it isn’t important.  I am a huge fan of hers, and to put that in perspective, please realize that there are few actors or actresses that I say that about.  My list of favorites is severely limited to those who care about humanity and do humanitarian work.

Consequently, I’m a big fan of Robert Redford….Matt Damon….a few others and yes, Angelina Jolie.

So recently she announced that she had undergone a double mastectomy and then had breast reconstruction.  She stated that she did this because she was in a high-risk category to have breast cancer in the future. In fact, her mother died at the age of 57 from breast cancer.

She also stated that she felt it was a necessary step because she wanted to be around for her six children.

I was floored by this announcement.  Here is one of the most beautiful actresses in the world, a woman whose very livelihood is at least partially dependent upon her looks, giving up part of her sexual arsenal because she loves her children and wants to spend many more years with them.

Now some would say that’s a no-brainer, right?  Who wouldn’t want to live longer?  But I think that is a bit of an oversimplification.  We are all accustomed to Hollywood actors and actresses who are enamored with their physical appearance and who will spend literally millions of dollars to suspend aging and appear beautiful….and then we have Jolie who says “to hell with it” and has her breasts removed because life and the love of her family are more important.

Living Simple…it doesn’t get much simpler than that….love of family and love of life!

Do You Complicate Your Life?

Posted on

teacherWhat do you do to complicate your life?  A simple question for sure but I have the feeling the answer is not that simple.

Think about it…..each one of us sabotages our serenity at certain points during the day, and I think that is very natural.  But what about the long run?  What do we do that has long-lasting effects and upsets our own personal banana cart?

Do we work longer hours than necessary?  Do we buy things on credit that we really can’t afford? Do we have unhealthy expectations of others?  Do we constantly want things instead of concentrating on our needs?

Let’s look at it from a different angle.  What is the largest problem in your life today?  Got it?  Now, what part did you play in the existence of that problem?miscellaneous....and steph 004

Living Simple is not rocket science.  It is understanding priorities and then moving towards those priorities.  For me, happiness is a priority, as is love.  As long as I concentrate on those two things, my life is very simple.  If I deviate and begin searching for things that have nothing to do with true happiness or love, then I am asking for trouble.

Bev and I just got done talking about her taking on another part-time job.  She wants to work Saturdays for some invalid woman who needs someone to watch over her.  All well and good, and the pay is fine and we could use some extra money.

DSCN0948On the other hand, Saturdays are our days together, the days when we enjoy each other’s company and go do our runabouts and little drives in the country, so we would be giving that up if she took the job.

We haven’t come to a consensus yet, but I can tell you which way I am leaning.

Happiness + Love = Living Simple!

I know, I said I would be doing this blog any longer, but I just had a wild hair and decided to do it….whether it continues or not is anyone’s guess. J  Thanks for stopping by and I hope you are having a simple, loving, happy day.

Goodbye From Living Simple

Posted on

wash d.c.Living Simple is saying goodbye, or rather I am saying goodbye for the Living Simple blog.

Bev sat me down yesterday and helped me find focus to my writing.  I’ve been all over the place and as a result I have lost the main focus I started out with, namely to empower people and give them hope.

So that is what I will now focus on.  I have two new blogs that I am constructing, and I would imagine I’ll be ready to go with them in a week or so.  They will speak about issues that are very important to me, and they will help me return to the writing that I was born to do.

I hope this blog has helped you in some way. I believe in the Simple Life.  I believe this society needs to yes, find its focus, and return to the days of old when there were more important things in life than just possessions and owning the latest toys.  I will continue to lead the simple life and I hope you find it too.

Thank you for following on my journey, and I hope you follow along with my new blogging ventures.

I wish for each of you a Simple Life, one filled with happiness and love.

Peace be with all of you.

Having A PIPO Sort of Day

street fair Aug 2012 034I was just reading the news stream on Yahoo.  You know, if aliens landed here and read the same news stream I did, they would probably leave immediately, thinking this planet wasn’t worth visiting.  What a bunch of garbage.

Lindsay Lohan and her feud with David Letterman….Lindsay Vonn and her love affair with Tiger….North Korea and Russia both pissed at the U.S……mass-stabbings and a little girl dismembered…..the latest NCAA football scandal…..Syria……one little not-so-simple day in the world.Mt. Rainier 2010 094

Some people love it.  I swear, some people love chaos and the feed off of misery, as long as it isn’t their misery.  We are surrounded by adrenalin junkies, the ambulance-chasers of the 21st Century, and if they aren’t finding their stimulation online then they find it watching “Reality TV.”

Now the interesting thing about what I just wrote is if you did a survey, everyone that you talked to would agree, that this is a crazy world and we all need to slow down and appreciate the beauty in life….and yet they are part of the same madness.

miscellaneous....and steph 004It’s like a slow-motion train wreck.  You can see it happening and you can’t stop it from happening.  You know it’s going to be horrendous but you can’t take your eyes off of it.  It never dawns on people that they can simply turn away from it and not watch.

I’m not a sociologist or psychologist.  All I know is that I am happier when I turn my attention to the beauty in life.  When I concentrate on the positives and not the negatives, then my life is great.  I call it PIPO….positive in/positive out.  It’s the only mantra I need to get through a day.
