A Simple Weekend of Bartering and Saving Money

Posted on

Downtown and the garden April 21, 2012 052168 money saving tips!   When you get a chance, browse that list and maybe you’ll find something that will help you.

I know you are getting tired of hearing about our garden but seriously, if you have room in your yard you really need a garden.

We planted plum and pear trees, and we put them in the front yard next to the street.  Why?  Because in three years, when they have matured and are bearing fruit, we want the neighbors to be able to walk by and pick a plum or a pear and enjoy it during their walk.  Living Simple!

We bought 120 onions for four bucks and planted those this weekend.  That means every onion we eat this next year will have cost us what, almost three-and-a-half cents each.  Can you buy an onion at the grocery store for that price?

I built a garden potting table this weekend out of pallets.  Total cost:  ZERO!Downtown and the garden April 21, 2012 057

We went for a walk last evening and said hello to twelve people during our twenty minute walk.  Total cost:  ZERO!  What did we get back in return:  COUNTLESS JOY!

The neighbor across the street gave us some lilies and irises this weekend.  In return we gave them some lumber that was sitting on the side of our house that we didn’t need.  Total cost of that exchange:  ZERO!  It’s called bartering, or sharing if you will, and there is no cost but there is an expression of gratitude and some very important social interaction.

Just random thoughts on this Monday about the Simple Life.

A shout out to my lil’ Sis Cyndi who just finished a beautiful piece of artwork.  You can see it here!

And for Melanie, who would like to see Meatless Monday catch on, I vow not to eat meat today in her honor.

Have a great day all of you!

  1. I never tired of hearing about people’s gardens. 🙂 They are one of the greatest joys in life and worth all the hard work.

      • This year is the first year I do not. It is partly why I started writing, to fill the void. I am currently in a third-floor apartment so I am making do with pots on a terrace. My parents have a small farm and I will get to enjoy it on spring break this week. In the past, I had several rotating plots, herbs, flowers, different sections…I will one day again, I’m sure! 🙂

      • Lurana, from a farm to an apartment…that would be social shock. 🙂 I hope you get to have that garden soon my friend.

  2. Sounded like a perfect weekend and glad to hear of it. Here is to a great week now ahead, too!! 🙂

    • Hi Kathryn!

Any new snow there? You really have to try out Spring. 🙂 We won’t be planting for another two weeks. We are still seeing temps below freezing at night and we don’t want to kill off the new plants. I’m trying very hard to be patient. 🙂

I hope you have a wonderful weekend with Andy’s family, and thanks for the visit my loyal friend.

  7. I’m looking forward to seeing more pics once your garden really gets going! Now I’m also looking forward to Spring again so that we can get planting some more herbs and veggies. Thanks for the shout out! It would be nice if it caught on, but I know a lot of people are set in their ways and I don’t blame them. Thank you for giving it a shot though…you are a great friend and supporter. I’d love to know what you ended up having for supper! 😉

    • Hey Suzie, how ya doing? Thanks for stopping by my friend. Actually, if I stopped and thought about it, I probably have meat-free days three or four times a week….I didn’t realize it until I stopped and reflected on a normal week. Mel would be proud of me. 🙂
